Undergraduate Researcher

Originally founded in 1997, Baskin Engineering is the first professional school at UC Santa Cruz. Over the past 25 years, Baskin Engineering has become a unique 21st century school of engineering and technology, characterized by evolutionary growth fueled by on-going research opportunities that open new areas of intellectual inquiry.  Baskin Engineering has grown to include six academic departments, a variety of research centers and institutes, and has ambitious plans for further programmatic growth. The focus of Baskin Engineering educational programming is to instill strong basic knowledge for sound practice in science and ethical engineering for the well-being of society, and its diverse curricula facilitate creative thinking and prepare students for productive and rewarding careers. Baskin Engineering is focused on building collaborative connections and expanding instruction and research activities for faculty and students at UC Santa Cruz, both at its Santa Cruz campus and at its campus in Silicon Valley, the international center of technological innovation.

The Biomolecular Engineering (BME) Department within the Baskin School of Engineering features an interdisciplinary blend of engineering, biology, chemistry, and statistics designed to foster collaboration with other departments. This blend reflects our vision of the direction that biomedical discovery will take over the next two decades.

Members of the Biomolecular Engineering Department collaborate actively with faculty from other engineering departments and with the Physical and Biological Sciences departments of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental BiologyChemistry and BiochemistryMicrobiology and Environmental ToxicologyEcology and Evolutionary Biology, and Ocean Sciences.

 

10 hours a week

This role is open to work-study and non-work-study students.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

  • Familiarity with basic biology and basic linux or python skills. Interested applicants will also need to submit an application through this Google Form: https://forms.gle/1Rt4yNjct8MWCTV77

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Preferred:

  • Experience running bioinformatic tools
  • Experience with basic statistical methods: correlation, two-group tests

Statement of Percentage of Duties (total 100%):

  • 25% Duties: Documenting work in a lab notebook, submitting weekly reports
  • 5% Duties: Attending and presenting at meetings
  • 70% Duties: Use publicly available RNA sequencing data and process them with bioinformatics tools. Develop custom code to run statistical tests and data analysis.
