Orientation & Welcome Leader 2023-24

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:
Orientation & Welcome Leaders (OWLs) are members of the College Student Life Team and are primarily responsible for creating, implementing, and evaluating community-wide college programs/events for the Fall quarter. OWLs serve as a resource for students and are an active community leader in their respective college(s). 

This position requires the ability to consistently demonstrate good judgment, discretion, sensitivity, leadership, creativity, follow through, attention to detail.

The following description addresses the overall duties, responsibilities and expectations of the OWL position. This document is by no means exhaustive and applies to the functions of the role. Detailed information will be provided during employment training.



Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a team environment
- Demonstrate effective communication practices, self awareness, and relationship building skills in order to successfully work with a team through conflict/success
- Must be a registered UCSC student
- Must commit to all responsibilities and functions of the position
- Must maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA from the time of application throughout employment
- Must be in good student conduct standing:
- Good student conduct standing is defined as anything below probation and no findings of responsibility for Sexual Violence/Sexual Harassment (SVSH) policy violations
- Academic integrity violations may also impact eligibility
- Must be willing to work weekly hours; hours will vary by individual college and college needs.
- Understand college themes and university principles. Be committed to building positive connections to the college themes and the principles of community for first year students.
- Work with diverse individuals and groups. Be open to engaging with and supporting different perspectives and experiences.
- Demonstrate clear and effective communication, both online and in-person.
- Show strong interpersonal communication skills with a variety of audiences, including first-year on-campus and off-campus students, first-generation students, transfer students, international students, commuter students, students with different abilities, students from diverse cultural backgrounds, and students with intersectional experiences.
- Plan and execute events and programs (Both Virtual & In-Person)
- Be organized and demonstrate time management skills

Preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities (Not Required):
- Affiliation with College of interest
- Demonstrated interest in student leadership, community-building, mentorship, and/or skill development
- Demonstrated ability to use websites and computer graphics software to create flyers, brochures, and other desktop publications (i.e. InDesign, Photoshop, Canva, etc.)
- Basic working knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok, Twitch, Discord, etc. - Specific platform need with varies by college)
- Experience with Adobe creative cloud suite
- Work Study program participation/funding
- Ability to work in-person at programs & functions.

Percentage of time: (very approximate)

45% - Assist in the planning and implementation of virtual or in person student programs.

25% - During Fall Quarter, serve as an academic and social resource to students new to campus and the university. Do so by answering questions, planning and attending events, leading small groups, and helping new students acclimate to college life.

30% - Attend the college guide team meetings and trainings during fall quarter, including pre-Fall start preparation. (Note: These trainings & meetings may be held online).
