Lead Orientation & Welcome Leader 2023-24

Skills Knowledge and Abilities Required: 
Lead Orientation Welcome Leaders (OWLs) are members of the College Student Life Team. They are primarily responsible for working with Orientation Welcome Leaders in creating, implementing, and evaluating community-wide programs/events at their College, starting with Fall Welcome Week 2023. Lead OWLs serve as a resource to support new students in adapting and acclimating to the university, are aware of the needs and interests of their peers, and are active community leaders in their affiliated College. They can lead and can handle multiple tasks effectively for Fall Quarter. 

This position is open to all UCSC full-time or part-time students interested in helping create fun and engaging community-building programs at their College. This position requires demonstrated ability to exercise consistent good judgment, discretion, sensitivity, leadership, creativity, follow-through, and attention to detail, and ability to start working in early September 2023. If you have experience planning events (H.S. or volunteer work) and are willing to acquire knowledge of the College theme(s) and gain project management skills, this job is for you. Additionally, a Lead OWL mentors other student leaders and has good experience with programming at UCSC.


Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrate strong ability to work independently in a team environment
- Demonstrate effective communication practices, self awareness, and relationship building skills in order to successfully work with a team through conflict/success
- Must be a registered UCSC student
- Must commit to all responsibilities and functions of the position
- Must maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA from the time of application throughout employment
- Must be in good student conduct standing:
 - Good student conduct standing is defined as anything below probation and no findings of responsibility for Sexual Violence/Sexual Harassment (SVSH) policy violations
-Academic integrity violations may also impact eligibility
- Must be willing to work weekly hours; hours will vary by individual college and college needs.
- Understand college themes and university principles. Be committed to building positive connections to the college themes and the principles of community for first year students.
- Experience working with diverse individuals and groups. Be open to engaging with and supporting different perspectives and experiences.
- Demonstrate clear and effective communication, both online and in-person.
- Show strong interpersonal communication skills with a variety of audiences, including first-year on-campus and off-campus students, first-generation students, transfer students, international students, commuter students, students with different abilities, students from diverse cultural backgrounds, and students with intersectional experiences.
- Experience planning and executing events and programs (Both Virtual & In-Person)
- Demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills.



Preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities (Not Required):
- Affiliation with College of interest
- Experience in student leadership, community-building, mentorship, and/or skill development
- Leadership skills should exhibit strong communication skills, and Lead OWL should be able to oversee multiple programs with ease
- Must demonstrate flexibility, which include: the capacity to adjust to change, and can deal with unexpected problems or tasks effectively in a timely manner
- Previous knowledge and experience in the OWL position role for at least one quarter
-Demonstrate knowledge and ability to use websites and computer graphics software to create flyers, brochures, and other desktop publications (i.e. InDesign, Photoshop, Canva, etc.)
- Basic working knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok, Twitch, Discord, etc. - Specific platform need with varies by college)
- Experience with Adobe creative cloud suite
- Work Study program participation/funding
- Ability to work in-person at programs & functions.

Percentage of time: (very approximate)
  • 45% - Assist in the planning and implementation of virtual or in person student programs. Lead, oversee, and assist with Welcome Week committees and planning events, which can include: publicity for the college, be the main point of contact to supervisor regarding events, and work well with Program/Community Assistants to plan events during Fall Quarter. 

  • 25% - During Fall Quarter, serve as an academic and social resource to students new to campus and the university by answering questions, planning and attending events, leading small groups, and helping new students acclimate to college life.

  • 30% - Attend the college guide team meetings and trainings during fall quarter, including pre-Fall start preparation. (Note: These trainings & meetings may be held online).
